What Are Essential Oils?

Essential oils are considered man's first medicine. Ancient Egyptian people used oils for healing and warding off diseases, skin and hair care, embalming and in religious rituals and ceremonies. Well preserved oils were found in alabaster jars in King Tut's tomb as they were considered more precious than gold.

The term aromatherapy as we know it today was first coined in 1937 by the French chemist Rene Maurice Gattefosse. In 1910 he burnt his hand badly in his laboratory and being the first available compound handy, treated his burn with pure undiluted lavender oil, which not only immediately eased the pain, but helped heal the hand without any sign of infection or scar.

During the second world war, as a result of Gattefosse's experiments, Dr. Jean Valnet used essential oils to treat injured soldiers with great success. Since the late 1970 and early 80's the use of essential oils and aromatherapy has become a major part of alternative and holistic health systems.

Often regarded as “The life blood of the plant” essential oils are aromatic, volatile liquids distilled from shrubs, flowers, trees, roots, bushes and seeds. They are distilled in stainless steel cooking chambers at low pressure and temperature in order to maintain their valuable healing properties. This makes them highly concentrated and far more potent than dried herbs, yet so much safer.

Essential Oils are different from vegetable oils wherein they do not contain fats so they are not greasy and do not clog pores. On the contrary, essential oils are so small in molecular size that they penetrate the tissues of the skin effecting every cell in the body within 20 mins. and are metabolized within 2.5 hours without leaving any toxic residues in the body. They are lipid soluble and capable of passing through cell membranes, even those hardened by oxygen deficiency.
